The stunning ascent of Biffy Clyro has hit a new level with the news that their new album ‘Opposites’ has gone straight to #1 with first week sales of over 70,000. Released to an array of glowing reviews, the band’s sixth album is their first to hit the top of the charts.
Recorded in Santa Monica with producer GGGarth Richardson, ‘Opposites’ brims with fresh new ideas at every turn. Opener ‘Different People’ evolves from a tender introduction before erupting into fierce waves of impassioned energy; the stop-start riffs in ‘Sounds Like Balloons’ are interrupted by a harp; and ‘Little Hospitals’ factors in an explosion of kazoos.
Other highlights include ‘Stingin’ Belle’ which reprises Biffy Clyro’s angular alt-rock attack before atmospherically turning to the Scottish highlands with militaristic drum rolls and soaring bagpipes; the Love-meets-Rush mariachi sound-clash of ‘Spanish Radio’; and ‘Skylight’ which, together with ‘The Fog’, is one of two keyboard-based songs written with the help of leading contemporary soundtrack composer Clint Mansell (Black Swan, Moon, The Wrestler). The album’s first full single ‘Black Chandelier’ provided the band with their eighth Top 20 hit when it entered the charts at #14.
About to embark upon a European tour, Biffy Clyro will return to the UK and Ireland next month for their biggest arena tour to date. Several shows are already sold out, and the tour culminates with the band’s first show at the 20,000 capacity London O2 Arena. Subsequent North American shows include two Madison Square Garden shows as support to Muse and two sets at Coachella.
